Discover the cultural, historical, and ecological significance of Eastern Hemlock trees — Pennsylvania’s state tree — with this engaging, one-hour lesson plan (be sure to TAKE IT OUTSIDE if possible). This hands-on program introduces students to Eastern Hemlocks and the important role they play in Pennsylvania heritage and ecosystems. Students will also learn about the threats posed by the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA).
Your students will:
🧠 Identify Eastern Hemlocks by examining their unique needles, cones, and bark
🧡 Explore traditional uses of hemlock trees – including medicine, shelter, and industry
🌍 Learn about the critical role these trees play in supporting wildlife and protecting cold-water streams for native species like brook trout (PA State Fish)
🔬 Participate in a fun, hands-on activity that simulates the impact of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid on a Hemlock tree.
🌱 Discuss modern conservation and stewardship efforts to protect Eastern Hemlocks
This lesson plan is tailored for grades 3–4 and includes optional extensions and adaptations for older students in middle school and high school, making it an easy fit into any science, history, or environmental education curriculum.
