Students Learn How Wood Products Store Carbon Through a Hands-On Exercise

“Carbon storage exercises highlight the connection between wood products and environmental health. We are grateful for the grant that helped us teach students that Pennsylvania’s working forests work!”

– Stephanie Phillips-Taggart, Executive Director, KWPA

The Project

To create awareness about working forests, which provide a renewable and steady supply of materials for wood products while maintaining ecological health, biodiversity, and long-term productivity, Keystone Wood Products Association (KWPA) provides educational outreach to schools and community groups.
Through LHR’s grant support, KWPA purchased materials that were used in classroom exercises that demonstrate wood products’ ability to store carbon. Each student and teacher crafted a wooden keychain then weighed it to calculate how much carbon the wood components stored.

Lasting Impact

This exercise, in conjunction with KWPA’s presentation, underscores the significant role that wood products play in our environment and correlates forest health to the demand for wood products. Through the grant effort, KWPA reached approximately 215 students and 11 teachers. Many thanks to LHR and DCNR for the grant award!

Funding & Partnerships

This mini-grant was financed in part by the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Heritage Area Funds, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
