Basic Tree/Leaf ID – Hands-On Learning for Grades 3-8 (easily adaptable for other levels)

Introduce students to the different trees that make up Pennsylvania forests and the resources and habitats they provide. Explore classification methods with hands on activities as students use their senses to observe, differentiate, and categorize.

Your students will:

• 🧠 Observe which characteristics they already use to differentiate between trees and learn how to categorize their observations.

• 🌳 Explore different tree species in Pennsylvania and their modern and historic uses.

• 🌲 Participate using a simplified dichotomous key as they are introduced to basic tree identification concepts.

• 🪵Discuss the properties of different trees, their ecological roles, and their importance to people.

These lesson plans are adjusted for grades 3–4, 5–6, and 7–8 and can be adapted for other levels or expanded upon, making them an easy fit for science, history, or environmental education curricula. Numerous additional tree identification resources are referenced for teacher convenience.
