Explore the Lumber Heritage Region with Geocaching!

The Lumber Heritage Region GeoTour is an outdoor scavenger hunt-style adventure that takes participants across the region using geocaching as the guide. Players use GPS coordinates to locate 23 hidden caches placed at sites connected to the area’s rich logging and timber history. Along the way, participants discover landmarks, industries, and stories that shaped the region—turning a hike or road trip into an interactive history experience.

As you travel through the region, be sure to explore the LHR Lumber Heritage Trail, a self-guided cultural experience that shares stories about the people, places, and industries that built Pennsylvania’s lumber heritage. Through the LHT app, visitors can listen to audio stories and learn more about the region while exploring cache locations and nearby historic sites.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants use a smartphone or GPS device to search for hidden containers, called “Geocaches,” placed at specific coordinates around the world. Each cache typically contains a logbook for finders to sign and sometimes small tradeable items, creating a real-world treasure hunt experience. Players use clues and location data shared through the app or website to navigate to these spots, which can be hidden in parks, cities, forests, and landmarks. Geocaching blends exploration, problem-solving, and outdoor adventure, encouraging people to discover new places they might not otherwise visit.

Getting Started

Geocaching is free to play; all you need to do is download the official app and create an account. Next, print out the Lumber Heritage Region GeoTour passport or visit one of our participating partners. Each Geocache has a code word you’ll need to write down to claim your coin at the end.
