Honoring a Tree That Shaped a Community

The story of Castanea Township is inseparable from the story of the chestnut tree. Once a defining species in Pennsylvania’s forests, the American chestnut was devastated by the chestnut blight of the early 20th century. Yet its legacy remains strong in Castanea.

With support from an LHR mini-grant, the Castanea Township Recreation Committee developed a historical sign dedicated to the heritage of the chestnut and its impact on local history. As Supervisor John Gradel noted:
“The chestnut and the history of Castanea are forever intertwined. We value the opportunity to recognize our heritage associated with the chestnut and the chestnut blight. This mini-grant will assist us in providing valuable education for residents and visitors.”

The Project

The new educational sign was installed at the Castanea Historic Train Station and Model Railroad Complex, which also serves as an entrance to the Bald Eagle Valley Trail. This placement ensures that thousands of visitors and residents each year will encounter the sign, connecting them to the township’s heritage and the larger story of Pennsylvania’s forests.

Lasting Impact

The chestnut tree was once known as the “bread tree” for its many uses in food, timber, and community life. By memorializing its role in Castanea’s identity, this project provides a permanent reminder of how natural resources shape culture and community resilience.

Funding & Partnerships

This mini-grant was financed in part by the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Heritage Area Funds, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
