Grants and Mini-Grant Opportunities

The Lumber Heritage Region (LHR) proudly supports projects that celebrate and enhance our region’s rich history, vibrant culture, outdoor recreation, and conservation efforts. Our grant programs focus on projects where these themes intersect, fostering initiatives that make a lasting impact across our communities.

Mini-Grants

Funded through the Pennsylvania Heritage Areas Program Fund and administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, our mini-grants are designed to bring innovative ideas to life.

PLEASE NOTE – Mini Grant Projects should be able to be completed in 12 months or LESS.

Eligible applicants include:

All projects must be located within the LHR boundaries, which span 15 counties. If applying from Indiana, Cambria, or Clarion Counties, contact us to confirm eligibility.

Penn College Kiln Project

Purchase and installation of a new lumber dry kiln chamber to support the hands-on curriculum for the Forest Technology program at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Read more

Creation of interpretive panels and nature trail blaze signs, integrating QR code technology, and improving accessibility at Indian Park Nature Trail. Read more

Scripture Rocks Heritage Park

Development and installation of 20 interpretive signs to educate visitors about the historical, cultural, and natural features of Scripture Rocks Heritage Park. Read more

Creation and distribution of a color brochure featuring a map, seasonal photos, driving directions, trail highlights, etiquette, contact information, and local attractions for the Mahoning Shadow Trail. Read more

Forest County Historical Museum Enhancement

Enhancement of the Forest County Historical Museum, including the creation of a Replica Lumber Camp Building, interior improvements, secure artifact displays, and electrical infrastructure for educational purposes. Read more

Elk and Nature Tourism Plan

Comprehensive planning study to develop a sustainable tourism strategy for elk viewing and nature tourism, focusing on visitor management, ecological needs, economic benefits, and educational outreach. Read more

Bennett Branch Recreation Enhancement

Enhancement of recreational opportunities in the Bennett Branch Watershed through the installation of signage kiosks, development of an interactive web-based map, and placement of interpretive signage at key access points. Read more

Lock Haven Boat Dock

Installation of a 60-foot seasonal public boat dock to enhance river access, promote tourism, and support local businesses and community activities in Lock Haven. Read more

Flaming Foliage Visitor’s Center

Enhancement of the Flaming Foliage Visitor’s Center, including ADA accessibility upgrades, interior improvements, new furnishings, and electrical enhancements to support community events and visitor engagement. Read more

VanTassel Tannery Historical Panel

Design and installation of a historical panel to educate the public about the VanTassel Tannery and the importance of the timber and bark industry in leather production. Read more

Lumbering and Rafting Book

Republishing of the 1922 James Mitchell book on logging and rafting, with added historical photos, to make it affordable and accessible, promoting the local history of Clearfield County. Read more

Creation of a digital and interactive historical display, including a looping movie, canvas posters, and a working center, to educate visitors and students about the history of lumber and river usage in Curwensville. Read more

Curwensville Canoe Launch

Improvement and upgrade of the canoe launch path to enhance safety and access, coupled with the installation of interpretive signage highlighting the historical significance of log booms. Read more
