Visit / The Lumber Heritage Maple Trail
Sweet Retreat Farm is a family-run maple syrup operation where rustic tradition meets thoughtful innovation. Owned and lovingly operated by John and Connie Kallerson, the farm is located at 333 Dutch Hill Road and is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Potter County. What began as a small backyard project has grown into a cherished local treasure, where the process of maple syrup production remains as hands-on and heart-driven as ever. Each spring, as the temperatures begin to warm and sap starts to flow, the Kallersons fire up their wood-fed 2×6 stainless steel evaporator tucked inside a charming creekside sugar shack. The sap—collected with a combination of traditional buckets and modern food-grade tubing—passes through a reverse osmosis system before being boiled down with precision, patience, and plenty of love.
What makes Sweet Retreat Farm special is more than just the syrup—it’s the feeling you get when you step onto the property. The sugarhouse, nestled along the mossy banks of a winding creek, feels like something out of a storybook, where plumes of steam drift into the forest canopy and visitors are greeted like old friends. John and Connie are warm, welcoming stewards of their land and craft, always eager to share the syrup-making process and the rich history behind it. They open their doors during Potter–Tioga Maple Weekend each March, inviting guests to experience the sights, smells, and tastes of sugaring season firsthand. From the soft crackle of firewood to the golden pour of freshly finished syrup, the experience is both timeless and deeply personal.
With a commitment to quality and community, the Kallersons produce syrup that not only tastes exceptional but carries the spirit of their farm in every drop. Whether you’re sampling syrup by the warmth of the evaporator, enjoying a peaceful drive through Dutch Hill, or taking home a bottle of handcrafted sweetness, a visit to Sweet Retreat Farm is more than just a stop—it’s a journey into the heart of Pennsylvania maple country, where the sugar runs deep and the hospitality runs even deeper.
