The Jefferson County Historical Society (JCHS) was established in 1967 and is the designated historical organization for the county. The JCHS mission is to engage people of all ages in the history of Jefferson County. They collect and care for relevant objects, images and documents and they invite county residents and visitors to research their materials, interact with the exhibits, take part in their programs and read their publications in order to encourage an understanding of Jefferson County's past and afford a vision for the future.
The JCHS manages the Jefferson County History Center which houses a 12 gallery museum presenting relative exhibits of the counties history to both residents and tourists. It is currently open 4 days a week. The organization also operates the Parker Archives which holds the organizationβs collections and archives as well as a large amount of Jefferson County documents.
The JCHS also manages and operates the Scripture Rocks Heritage Park which is a free access outdoor tourist destination just outside of Brookville. The Park has cultural heritage attractions as well as being a nature/hiking Park
The Jefferson County History Center relies on grants, admissions, donations, museum shop sales and especially special events income to maintain an adequate operating budget.
The JCHS has a long history of successful grant management. During the past 10 years the organization has successfully administered grant funding through various sources including the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Institute for Libraries and Museum Science, DCNR, American Association of State and Local History, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Allegheny National Forest, Lumber Heritage Region and the Jefferson County Hotel Tax Committee.
In the past, they were named the Gateway to the Lumber Heritage Region.
