Visit / The Lumber Heritage Maple Trail
On the rolling hills of Tioga County, Pennsylvania, just outside of Wellsboro and near Hills Creek State Park, sits Miller’s Purely Maple—a small, family-run farm built on generations of hard work and sweet tradition. The land was first purchased in 1942 by Dale Miller’s father, and what began as a few backyard taps in the 1970s has grown into a thriving maple operation. In 1995, Dale and his wife Melanie—who also comes from a maple and dairy farming background—officially launched their syrup-making journey with just 100 taps and a flat pan over an open fire. That first year yielded 40 gallons. Since then, the Millers have grown their operation to over 8,300 taps spread across 125 acres of their 550-acre property, producing thousands of gallons of syrup each year.
Every drop of sap comes from trees on their own land, gathered through miles of food-grade tubing that winds through the woods and feeds a central hub just 500 feet from the sugarhouse. From there, sap travels underground to holding tanks, where it begins its journey to becoming syrup. In 2022, the Millers built a state-of-the-art sugarhouse complete with a natural gas evaporator, reverse osmosis system, cold storage, and a commercial kitchen—allowing them to produce syrup more efficiently and sustainably than ever before. In 2024, they added a cozy sales and tasting room where visitors can browse and sample over 30 hand-crafted maple products. In 2025, they delighted guests even further by introducing maple soft serve ice cream, which quickly became a local favorite.
While the tools and technology have changed, the heart of Miller’s Purely Maple remains deeply rooted in care for the land, trees, and community. No insecticides or chemicals touch their maples, and every product is made in small batches, ensuring quality and freshness. The Millers are proud to share their passion with visitors year-round—whether it’s through tours of their facilities, a behind-the-scenes video called Maple the Miller’s Way, or during their popular annual events, including pancake breakfasts, festivals, and holiday markets. Dale and Melanie’s journey from a humble backyard hobby to one of the region’s most respected maple producers is a testament to their dedication, ingenuity, and love for the sweet life they’ve built—one tap at a time.
