New Interpretive Panel Honors Lumber Heritage at DuBois VFW Post 813
DuBois, PA – The DuBois Area Historical Society, with support from the Lumber Heritage Region (LHR) Mini Grant Program, has completed the installation of the Sidney Fuller Lumber Mill Interpretive Panel at the James J. Patterson V.F.W. Post 813, 114 Fuller Avenue, DuBois, PA.

This panel tells the story of Sidney Fuller, an early lumberman who played a pivotal role in the growth of DuBois and the surrounding region. Born in New York in 1820, Fuller established multiple sawmills, timber properties, and community institutions in Clearfield and Jefferson Counties, leaving a lasting legacy on the area’s economic and cultural development.

The interpretive panel is part of the Historical Society’s ongoing effort to create a network of history markers throughout the community. As of early 2024, the Society had placed eight interpretive panels, three of which highlight lumber heritage, with seven more panels in design that will trace the history of DuBois from its founding through 2020. The long-term goal is to install 20–25 panels to form a walking history tour throughout the city.
The project was made possible through the 2024 LHR Mini Grant Program, with matching support provided by the DuBois Area Historical Society (cash and volunteer research/design) and the City of DuBois, which contributed installation services.
“The Historical Society’s interpretive panels are a vital part of telling our community’s story,” said representatives of the DuBois Area Historical Society. “We are proud to honor Sidney Fuller’s contributions to the region’s lumbering heritage while expanding our walking tour for residents and visitors alike.”
This project reflects a strong partnership between the DuBois Area Historical Society, the Lumber Heritage Region, Visit Clearfield County, the City of DuBois, and the Downtown DuBois revitalization initiative, working together to preserve and promote the industrial and cultural heritage of north central Pennsylvania.
