Type of Project

Design and production of a self-guided walking tour brochure highlighting the historic mansions and properties within the Smethport Mansion District.

The Smethport Mansion District Walking Tour project aimed to promote the rich historical and architectural heritage of Smethport, McKean County. The project involved the design and production of a self-guided walking tour brochure that highlights the opulent mansions and distinctive properties within the Mansion District.

Nestled in the Pennsylvania Wilds, where the Nunundah Valley and Marvin Creek Valley converge, Smethport offers visitors a glimpse into its illustrious past. The walking tour brochure features photographs and descriptions of 30 historic mansions and properties, providing a numbered map to guide visitors along the village streets. The properties included in the tour showcase the wealth and architectural grandeur of the area, with notable sites such as the home of Henry Hamlin, once the wealthiest private banker in the United States, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a premier example of English Gothic architecture designed by William Halsey Wood.

The brochure allows visitors to explore the Mansion District at their own pace, offering a detailed account of each property’s historical significance. The tour includes properties like the Melbury House, used as a stopover on the Underground Railroad, and the residence of Dr. S.D. Freeman, a famed Civil War surgeon. The brochure also highlights the Bucktail Civil War Monument, emphasizing Smethport’s importance during the Civil War era.

This project was a collaborative effort, with funding provided by the Lumber Heritage Region and matching funds from the Smethport Chamber of Commerce and the Allegheny National Forest Vacation Bureau. The project resulted in the printing and distribution of 30,000 brochures, which are available at various local establishments and tourism centers.

The Smethport Mansion District Walking Tour brochure serves as an important tool for heritage tourism, attracting visitors interested in history and architecture. It promotes Smethport as a destination, encouraging exploration and appreciation of the village’s historical and cultural assets.
