Discover the Splendor of Williamsport’s Millionaires Row & Historic District

The Crown Jewel of Williamsport

Welcome to the Millionaire’s Row Historic District in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, a national historic district that showcases the grandeur of Victorian-era architecture and the rich history of the lumber industry. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, this district is a testament to the city’s prosperous past as the Lumber Capital of the World.

A Glimpse into History

The Millionaire’s Row Historic District includes 263 contributing buildings and one contributing site in a residential area of Williamsport. These buildings, dating back to as early as 1855, are prime examples of Victorian-style architecture. Notable non-residential buildings in the district include Trinity Church and Parish House, First Church of Christ-Scientist, Weightman Block, Park Home, and the Covenant Central Presbyterian Church. Way’s Garden, established in 1913, is the district’s contributing site. The Peter Herdic House, also located in the district, is separately listed on the National Register.

The Legacy of the Lumber Era

Once the Lumber Capital of the World, Williamsport boasted more millionaires per capita than any other city in the USA. These lumber barons’ Victorian homes on “Millionaire’s Row” are a testament to the city’s wealthy past. The combination of vast lumber assets, oil reserves, and the advent of railroads in the 1870s propelled McKean County’s economy to new heights, with Smethport at its heart.
