The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership (SGP) proudly announces the release of the updated Susquehanna River Water Trail – West Branch Map & Guide. This essential resource arrives 18 years after its original 2004 debut.
The Map & Guide covers the 228-mile water trail from Cherry Tree, PA, to Northumberland, PA, where it joins the main stem of the Susquehanna River Water Trail. This comprehensive guide features 16 full-color, UV-protected, waterproof map inserts within a water-resistant introductory guide, designed to endure the challenges of river conditions.
These detailed maps include public boat launch sites, river features, and information about the West Branch’s rich history and ecology. From its storied lumber heritage to its wild elk herds and remote forested ridgelines, the West Branch offers a unique paddling experience in Pennsylvania.
As the state-designated Water Trail manager, SGP aims to connect paddlers with this valuable resource and simplify trip planning along the trail. The update, completed over two years, involved a thorough inventory and ground-check of boat launches, points of interest, rapids, and other hazards along the 228-mile trail.
SGP extends its gratitude to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR), and the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) for their funding. Special thanks to Brian Swisher of The Swisher Studio for his dedication and to the volunteers and area outfitters who contributed significantly to this project.
David Decoteau of Riverside Adventure Company remarked, “Riverside Adventure Company is proud and honored to have been asked to help scout the river for the new West Branch Susquehanna paddling maps. As an area outfitter, we are dedicated to the idea of opening the Susquehanna River to more people and making it as safe, easy, and predictable as possible for people to plan and create their adventures on the rivers.”
The Susquehanna River Water Trail – West Branch Map & Guide is now available for purchase online at susquehannagreenway.org/shop for $25 (plus tax and shipping). All proceeds support work along the West Branch water trail.
The Susquehanna Greenway is a network of connected trails, parks, river access points, and communities that link people to the natural and cultural treasures of the Susquehanna River. SGP’s mission is to expand the Greenway, inspire outdoor engagement, and transform communities into desirable places to live, work, and explore.
