The Kinzua Sky Walk, located in northwestern Pennsylvania’s Kinzua Bridge State Park, is an unparalleled destination for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and thrill-seekers alike. Originally constructed in 1882, the Kinzua Viaduct was once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world. Stretching across 2,053 feet and towering 301 feet above the Kinzua Gorge, it was an engineering marvel of its time. The viaduct was a crucial part of the region’s industrial infrastructure, enabling the transport of goods and resources across Pennsylvania. However, in 2003, a tornado devastated the viaduct, toppling 11 of its 20 towers and leaving the structure in ruins.
In a brilliant blend of preservation and innovation, six of the remaining steel towers were repurposed to create the Kinzua Sky Walk, which extends 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge. This skywalk not only preserves the historical essence of the viaduct but also provides a modern experience for visitors. The walkway features railroad tracks leading to the overlook, culminating in a partial glass floor that allows visitors to gaze 225 feet down into the valley below. This unique perspective offers an exhilarating opportunity to “Walk the Tracks across the Sky.”
The Kinzua Sky Walk is open daily from 8 am to sunset, providing ample time for visitors to explore and enjoy the stunning views. The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center, located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA, serves as the starting point for your adventure. The center is open from 8 am to 4 pm, offering informative exhibits, a gift shop, and friendly staff ready to enhance your visit.
The park itself is a treasure trove of outdoor activities and amenities. Visitors can enjoy forestland picnic areas, hiking trails, and a park pavilion available for rental. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway, a shared-use road for bicycling, provides a scenic route to the park. Throughout the year, the Kinzua Bridge State Park offers various seasonal activities. In the warmer months, the park’s trails and picnic areas are perfect for family outings and nature walks. During the winter, the landscape transforms into a serene snow-covered wonderland, ideal for peaceful hikes and stunning photography opportunities.
The state-of-the-art Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center is a must-see for all park visitors. This 11,000 sq. ft. building features two exhibit halls showcasing the themes of Engineering, Energy, and the Environment. The exhibits provide fascinating insights into the history and significance of the Kinzua Viaduct and the surrounding area. The Visitors Center also houses the PA Wilds Cooperative Artisan Shop, offering handcrafted and handmade items from local artisans, making it a perfect spot to find unique souvenirs.
