Funding

  • Lumber Heritage Region: $10,000
  • Total Project Cost: $25,580

Type of Project

A structural study was performed and a design was developed to transform the former railroad trestle, located along Route 6 in Kane, into a multimodal trail featuring a walking and biking path as well as signage and lighting to celebrate Kane’s heritage. This section will add to the “Knox & Kane Rails to Trails” trail system which will provide a variety of outdoor activity opportunities. The trestle will also serve as a welcoming gateway to the Borough on Route 6.

Project Details

The Knox & Kane Rail Trail is home to a large historic trestle in the Borough of Kane, positioned prominently along Route 6. This trestle serves as a gateway to Kane, offering a unique opportunity to honor the railroad’s history while welcoming visitors to explore both the trail and the town.

Following the 2017 purchase of the 74-mile corridor by Headwaters Charitable Trust, efforts began to transform this structure into a standout feature. To ensure a high-quality and impactful design, a professional designer was engaged. Stone Consulting Inc. conducted a structural integrity assessment, followed by a presentation of design concepts by Derck & Edson.

Now, with a stunning conceptual design in place, the project is moving forward to structural engineering and final planning. The vision includes a multimodal non-motorized trail, an entry court, and coordinated wayfinding and interpretive signage that align with the nearby trailhead. Once completed, this project will serve as a pride point for the community and a striking landmark along Route 6, inviting more visitors to discover Kane and the surrounding region.
