Project Details
The Route 6 Knox & Kane Trestle Design Project in Kane, McKean County, involved a structural study and design development to transform a former railroad trestle into a multimodal trail. This project is part of the larger “Knox & Kane Rails to Trails” initiative, which seeks to repurpose the historic railroad corridor into a trail system that supports a variety of outdoor activities, including walking, biking, and sightseeing.
The trestle, located along Route 6, serves as a prominent landmark and a welcoming gateway to the Borough of Kane. The project’s goal was to create a visually appealing and functional trail feature that celebrates the area’s heritage and enhances recreational opportunities. The design includes a walking and biking path, signage, and lighting, making the trestle an inviting and safe destination for trail users.
A structural integrity assessment and report were completed by Stone Consulting Inc., followed by a presentation of design options by Derck & Edson. The conceptual design developed through this process highlights the trestle as a “statement piece” along Route 6, incorporating wayfinding and interpretive signage that coordinates with the nearby trailhead.
The project was funded by a grant from the Lumber Heritage Region, with additional support from the Headwaters Charitable Trust and the Knox & Kane Rail Trail. The total project cost was $25,580, with the grant covering $10,000 of the expenses.
The Route 6 Knox & Kane Trestle Design Project not only preserves an important piece of the region’s transportation history but also promotes outdoor recreation and tourism. By transforming the trestle into a multimodal trail, the project enhances the local infrastructure and supports community health and well-being.
