Project Details

The Indian Park Nature Trail project in Montoursville, Lycoming County, involved creating a unique recreational amenity designed to attract users of Indian Park as well as visitors from the Williamsport Bikeway. This project exemplifies asset-based development, leveraging the park’s existing natural and cultural features to enhance recreation and improve the community’s quality of life.

Key elements of the project included:

  1. Interpretive Panels and Signage: The project involved the creation of three interpretive panels and their aluminum pedestals, as well as three nature trail blaze signs. These signs were designed with QR code technology linking to online information and resources, providing visitors with easy access to additional educational content.
  2. Design Integration: The signage was designed within the context of design guidelines established by the Lumber Heritage Region’s Interpretive Plan and the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing presentation.
  3. Accessibility Improvements: The nature trail included ADA parking and an accessible trail around the periphery of the pond, making it inclusive for all visitors.

The nature trail aims to improve recreation, human health, and water quality by providing a well-maintained and educational outdoor space. The project supports the Lumber Heritage Region’s effort to build community connections and connect people to the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

The trail’s development was a collaborative effort, with significant interagency cooperation and organizational support. Funding for the project was provided by multiple sources, including the Lumber Heritage Region, DCNR, DCED, the First Community Foundation of PA, Montoursville Borough, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and Lycoming County. The total project cost exceeded $200,000.

The Indian Park Nature Trail now serves as an important community asset, offering a place for recreation, education, and connection to nature for residents and visitors alike.
