Nestled in southern Jefferson County along the scenic banks of Mahoning Creek, Punxsutawney is the largest borough in the county. Conveniently located at the intersection of U.S. Route 119 and State Route 36, Punxsutawney is approximately 90 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, making it a charming destination rich in history and community spirit.
Incorporated in 1850, Punxsutawney’s heritage is deeply rooted in the coal and timber industries, which were pivotal to its early development. Today, the borough preserves this legacy while embracing modern growth and a vibrant community life.
Operating under a 7-member Borough Council, Punxsutawney serves its 5,962 residents (2010 census) across 3.4 square miles. The Mayor, a key figure in the local government, oversees the Punxsutawney Police Department and acts as the council's tiebreaker. The borough features three voting wards and is home to three volunteer fire companiesoperating under the Punxsutawney Fire Department, ensuring safety and active civic engagement.
