Nestled within the serene woods of Brookville, Pennsylvania, lies a unique tale of one man's unwavering faith, hardships, and artistic dedication. The Scripture Rocks Heritage Park, operated by the Jefferson County Historical Society, offers visitors the opportunity to uncover the true story behind the mysterious carved Bible rocks, a fascinating part of Jefferson County's history.
Between 1910 and 1913, Douglas M. Stahlman meticulously engraved 67 sandstone boulders scattered across the forested hillsides as an expression of his religious convictions. These rocks, inscribed with Bible verses, stand as a testament to his spiritual journey. Key highlights include:
-Altar Rock: Converted into an open-air chapel for worship
-Stahlman’s Cabin: The location where he lived and penned his journal
In addition to Stahlman’s story, the park also features:
-A prehistoric Native American campsite
-Evidence of 19th-century quarrying and exploratory mining activities
