The Northern Appalachian Folk Festival (NAFF) was founded in 2013 by Indiana University of Pennsylvania professor and historian, Jim Dougherty, as a tribute to the rich history, culture, and traditions of the Northern Appalachian region. Inspired by his roots as the son of a coal miner, Jim envisioned a celebration that would honor the unique contributions of this diverse American region.

Incorporated as a charitable organization in 2018 and achieving federal 501(c)3 status in 2023, NAFF, Inc. is dedicated to:

-Preserving the Past: Safeguarding the traditions and history of Northern Appalachia.
-Promoting the Present: Showcasing local talent in music, art, folkways, and foodways.
-Securing the Future: Encouraging community engagement and economic growth through cultural preservation.

Programs and Initiatives:

-Annual Folk Festival: A vibrant event celebrating the music, art, crafts, and cuisine of Northern Appalachia, enriching the cultural environment and connecting communities.
-Folk School: Newly launched to teach and preserve the traditional skills and art forms of the region.
-Community Events: Programs that promote the rich heritage and identity of Northern Appalachia while boosting local economies.

Through its initiatives, NAFF strives to:

-Enhance the Quality of Life: Strengthening the cultural environment for residents and visitors.
-Create Jobs and Stimulate the Economy: Supporting artisans, musicians, and local businesses.
-Foster Community Connections: Building relationships within and beyond Northern Appalachia.
