The Simler House, built circa 1810, stands as a testament to early American history and the legacy of Revolutionary War veteran John Henry Simler. Located in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, this beautifully restored property provides a glimpse into the lives of the pioneers who helped shape the region.
Early Origins: Constructed with a typical tavern layout, the house originally featured a kitchen and barroom on the first floor, with guest accommodations on the second floor and attic. Although Simler never held a liquor license, the layout reflects its potential as a tavern.
Ownership: In 1824, Simler sold the home to Hardman Philips, brother of Henry Philips, the town’s founder. Over the years, the property served as a boarding house, bakery, and private residence.
Restoration: By 2000, the house had fallen into disrepair. Local philanthropist and Simler descendant Barbara Bezilla purchased and restored the home in 2001 in memory of Donald Simler, preserving its historical significance for future generations.
Ahead of Philipsburg’s 225th anniversary in September 2022, Philipsburg Historical Foundation Curator Chris Watson transformed the Simler House into a living history museum. Visitors can explore:
