At the Jabebo Studio we make nature and science themed earrings for gift shops located in more then 200 museums and nature centers around North America. They are made with paperboard material from cereal boxes that we collect from our community. On the front of the dangling piece is a colorful image designed by us. On the reverse you can still see evidence of graphics from the cereal box used in their fabrication. Jabebo strives to celebrate biodiversity and to promote science and nature education.
Our inspiration for these earrings comes from visiting nature centers, wildlife refuges, parks, gardens, museums and all kinds of other interesting locations. When there is a gift shop it always adds to the experience, especially because the discoveries there can be taken home. They are full of unique and educational items and we knew buying something was helping a good cause in some way. It was a big day for us the first time we took our earrings to a local nature center and they gave us an order for more. That was almost twenty years ago.
Our business began back in the 1990’s when we began playing around with the idea of mismatched earrings and noticed that our school teacher friends, and their students, were drawn to the colorful images and narrative themes. Since then, the process evolved while we invented and discovered equipment that would help us produce more efficiently. The use of cereal box paperboard was one of the first innovations and seemed an obvious choice since we were creating the earrings with paper.
