Learn More About INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TIMBER RAFTING (IATR)

Founded on November 11, 1989, in Barcelona, Spain, and officially established on September 1, 1991, in Spittal, Austria, the International Association of Timber-Raftsmen unites organizations dedicated to preserving the history and tradition of timber rafting. With 38 member associations from countries including Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Finland, and Sweden, the association promotes collaboration and conservation of the cultural and natural heritage tied to timber rafting.

Our Mission:

-Preserving History: Research and document historical timber floating methods used across global waterways to transport timber for construction, heating, and shipbuilding before the rise of industrial society.
-Conserving Ecosystems: Advocate for the protection of rivers, lakes, forests, and their ecosystems to ensure sustainable practices and environmental balance.
-Global Collaboration: Build partnerships with sister organizations worldwide to promote cooperation and the exchange of knowledge.

The International Association of Timber-Raftsmen embraces principles of peace, freedom, and equality, fostering unity among members regardless of geographical, racial, ethnic, religious, or political backgrounds.

Who We Are:

-Independent Members: Each member association is legally registered as a non-profit organization representing its district’s historical timber transport trade.
-Dedicated to Tradition: Members work to maintain the practices and knowledge of timber rafting, preserving this cultural heritage for future generations.

Be part of a global effort to protect the legacy of timber rafting and the natural environments that support this historic trade. Together, we can ensure these traditions continue to inspire and educate the world.
