The Canoe Place Historical Society of Port Allegany, Pennsylvania was established in
September 2008 by six very enthusiastic history buffs who decided it was time to have a
way to pass on the valuable History of the region.
The Society was formed for the purpose of preserving and displaying the history of
Port Allegany and surrounding areas; also, for the education of future generations and to
help research Family History.
At first, meetings were held each month with various programs presented by local
Historians.
The biggest activity was sponsoring the Port Allegany Bicentennial Celebration in
2016. The most important ongoing project is the refurbishing of the old Union
Cemetery in downtown Port Allegany.
With the loss of many of the original, older members the Society has been quietly
hanging on. Now with the advent of new, younger leadership the Canoe Place Historical
Society hopes to be very visible as a focus for the Historical Preservation of the area for
years to come.
