The Austin Dam Memorial Association (ADMA), established in 1994, has transformed the historic site of the Austin Dam into a beautiful recreational park that preserves local history and offers an array of outdoor activities. Located in a narrow valley along Freeman Run, this remarkable destination is steeped in history, reflecting the tragic story of the Bayless Paper Mill Dam, which failed in 1911, claiming over 78 lives in one of Pennsylvania’s worst dam disasters.
The towering ruins of the Austin Dam, also known as the Bayless Paper Mill Dam, stand as a testament to resilience and reflection. Visitors can marvel at the leaning concrete structures and the grassy meadow that now covers this historic ground. As the second-worst dam break in Pennsylvania’s history, the site tells the compelling story of the dam’s failure and the lives affected by the tragedy.
