Carol Zuzek’s story is one of determination, skill, and resilience. As a trailblazer in Pennsylvania’s lumber industry, Carol not only contributed to her family’s business but also redefined the role of women in a field traditionally dominated by men. From learning the intricacies of sawmill machinery to managing the operations of the Zuzek Lumber Company, her life serves as an inspiring example of what dedication and a strong work ethic can achieve.
Born Carol Cook on December 19, 1935, in Kane, McKean County, Carol married Emil Zuzek on September 26, 1959. Earlier that same year, Emil and his father, Andrew, had founded the Zuzek Lumber Company with just four employees and a single sawmill. Together, they worked tirelessly to build their business, cutting and hauling timber to the mill on West Wind Road in Kane.
Carol soon became an integral part of the company’s success. She learned to operate heavy machinery like the high lift and the debarker, essential tools in the milling process. Carol’s husband trusted her above all other employees with the debarking machine, recognizing her precision and care in handling the equipment. Despite the risks, Carol’s confidence and skill shone through. Reflecting on her experiences, she once joked to a reporter, “I ran the high lift and debarked. And I broke a lot of bones.”
As the Zuzek family grew, Carol shifted her focus to administrative responsibilities. She managed the company’s finances, handled timber bids, and oversaw operations. Her ability to juggle these tasks while raising her three sons—Joey, Paul, and Andrew—demonstrates her exceptional organizational skills and dedication.
After Emil’s death in 1989, Carol took over full management of the Zuzek Lumber Company. By this time, her sons were deeply involved in the family business: Joey ran the mill, Paul managed trucking, and Andrew oversaw logging. Despite the challenges of navigating a male-dominated industry, Carol maintained her role as the backbone of the company, earning the respect of her employees and peers alike.
Under Carol’s leadership, the Zuzek Lumber Company continued to thrive. She credited the success of the business to hard work and a commitment to excellence—a philosophy she instilled in her children. Each of her sons carried forward the values and practices that Carol and Emil had built the company on, ensuring the family’s legacy endured.
Carol’s contributions to the lumber industry extended beyond her technical and managerial skills. She proved that women could excel in all aspects of the industry, from operating heavy machinery to managing complex business operations. Her perseverance and adaptability inspired those around her and paved the way for future generations of women in the field.
