Heritage, Grants & Projects / Projects
Welcome to the “Local Legends of Lumbering” video series, brought to you by the Lumber Heritage Region (LHR). This project aims to share the rich generational history of local families involved in the forest products industry and inspire locals to explore career opportunities in their own backyards.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in the forest products industry? Thanks to a grant from DCNR, LHR has produced its first series of Local Legends of Lumber videos. These videos showcase the vital role Pennsylvania’s forests have played in building America, both in the past and today. The hardwoods harvested here are in demand worldwide.
The series includes three half-hour videos featuring interviews with industry veterans. The first interview is with Max Bingaman of Bingaman Lumber, who shares his passionate 84-year journey in the lumber industry. His heartfelt stories and vivid memories offer a glimpse into the past and present of this essential trade.
The second video features Roger Rorabaugh from the former Rorabaugh Lumber. Roger’s family has operated their mill for generations, and his story is filled with history and dedication. His insights into the industry and the local community are both inspiring and educational.
Lastly, the Hickman family from Hickman Woods shares their multi-generational story. Larry Hickman, his son, and grandchildren discuss their operations and the future of their business, highlighting the diverse roles and opportunities within the industry.
Our goal is to educate residents of the 15-county LHR area about the impact of the forest products industry on daily life and encourage the use of hardwoods. More importantly, we aim to inspire young people to consider careers in this rewarding and fruitful industry.
The legends in these videos share their life’s journeys, offering valuable insights and fostering a deeper appreciation for our region. We hope their stories inspire you to explore the many career paths available in the forest products industry.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. We hope you enjoy the Local Legends of Lumbering series and gain a new understanding of the importance of this industry in our lives.
