Development of a multipurpose trail hub and visitor center in Marienville, providing amenities and infrastructure to support a variety of outdoor recreational activities and enhancing the region’s tourism appeal.

Project Details

The Marienville Multipurpose Trail Hub & Visitor Center project represents a significant partnership between local and county governments, state and federal agencies, aimed at developing a trail hub that serves as a regional tourist attraction in Forest County. This initiative focuses on establishing Marienville as a central gateway to the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) and a key stop along a major rail trail under development.

The project involves several important elements:

  1. Trail Hub Development: The trail hub will cater to a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bicycling, ATV riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and equestrian activities. The hub will provide essential amenities such as parking, handicapped accessible restrooms, and information for trail users, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
  2. Property Acquisition and Planning: The Forest County Commissioners secured a $25,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to acquire the property for the trail hub. Jenks Township has worked closely with the Allegheny National Forest to develop a comprehensive plan that links the trail hub with the extensive trail network in the ANF.
  3. Infrastructure and Amenities: According to the Engineer’s Opinion of Probable Cost, the development of the trail head includes constructing a parking area, access road, a section of rail trail, connecting sidewalks, pavilion and picnic tables, bike racks, benches, solar lighting, sheds for gift vendors, and landscaping. The total estimated cost for constructing the trail head is approximately $630,000, with interior and exterior renovations projected at $162,000.

The project aims to boost the local economy by attracting more visitors to Marienville, a small rural community with a high number of seasonal homes and visitors. By developing the trail hub, Marienville will serve as a key access point to the ANF and a midway stop for the rail trail, promoting outdoor recreation and supporting local businesses.

The Lumber Heritage Region contributed $5,000 towards this project, with additional support from various grants and partnerships. Once fully developed, the Marienville Multipurpose Trail Hub & Visitor Center will significantly enhance the region’s tourism infrastructure, making it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
