Type of Project

Improvement and upgrade of the canoe launch path to enhance safety and access, coupled with the installation of interpretive signage highlighting the historical significance of log booms.

Project Details

The Curwensville Canoe Launch project was initiated to improve and upgrade the path to the river, ensuring easier and safer access for canoers. Additionally, the project aimed to highlight the historical significance of the log booms that are still visible in the river at the canoe launch area, providing educational value to visitors about the region’s logging history.

The Curwensville Borough, in collaboration with the Curwensville Area Revitalization Entities and The EADS Group, developed a Master Site Development Plan to design specific improvements for the canoe access area. The recommended design included constructing a 6-foot wide, 5-inch deep crushed limestone path with contours and switchbacks on steeper slopes, maintaining an 8% grade to the river. This new path design significantly enhances user safety and accessibility, allowing canoers to navigate the terrain more easily.

The project did not require permits from the Clearfield County Conservation District and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), streamlining the implementation process. The borough crew undertook the installation of the new path, starting with cleaning and excavating the area to prepare it for the 2A stone base. The path was then constructed, providing a durable and user-friendly surface for canoers.

An interpretive sign detailing the history of the Curwensville log booms was installed at the beginning of the path. This sign serves as an educational tool, allowing visitors to learn about the construction and function of log booms, which were used to hold back logs in the river during the logging era. As canoers proceed downstream, they can observe the remnants of these historical structures, gaining a deeper appreciation for the area’s industrial heritage.

The project had a profound impact on the local community, enhancing the recreational appeal of the river area and promoting outdoor activities. The improved access path and interpretive signage not only benefit canoers but also attract history enthusiasts and tourists, contributing to the local economy and raising awareness of the region’s rich logging history.

In conclusion, the Curwensville Canoe Launch project successfully combined safety improvements with historical education, creating a valuable resource for both residents and visitors. By upgrading the access path and highlighting the log booms’ historical significance, the project ensures that the river area remains a cherished and accessible part of Curwensville’s heritage.
