Maple Syrup Producer
Scott Kolesar of Spring Valley Maple produces his own syrup from a grove of sugar maples on his property in his “sugar shack.” Scott took 1st place in the Grade A - Amber Syrup in glass, 2nd place in Grade A - Dark Syrup in glass and 2nd place Grade A - Very Dark Syrup in glass at the 2023 Pennsylvania Farm Show with his maple syrup. The process starts with drilling a tap hole into a maple tree. A spout is inserted to direct the sap to either a bucket or into tubing that sends the sap to a large collection tank at the sugar house or a central collection area using a vacuum pump. From the storage tanks, the sap is often put through a reverse osmosis machine, which takes a percentage of the water from the sap before boiling. The evaporation process sends clouds of sweet maple scented steam billowing from the sugarhouse cupolas and steam stacks. An evaporator is where the boiling takes place. Stainless steel pans sit atop an arch, or firebox, where either oil or wood creates an intense fire. As the water in the sap evaporates, the sap thickens. When the thermometer in the pan reaches 219 degrees the syrup is ready to draw off. Even though it looks like the finished product it will still need to be filtered, adjusted for density and graded for flavor and color. Choose PURE MAPLE SYRUP, a natural sweetener and a smart food choice!

Butler Family Maple is a small family owned and operated Maple Farm in northern Pennsylvania. Established in 2006 When Jody and Jennifer Butler heard about Maple Knoll, a century farm located three miles from Jennifer’s parents’ home, being offered for sale, they jumped at the opportunity. The previous owners helped found the Potter/Tioga Maple Producers Association, and syrup had been produced on the farm since the 1800’s. It seemed like a perfect fit to the Butlers. Jennifer grew up on a dairy farm. Jody tapped trees throughout high school and early adulthood, using the proceeds from the 300 taps he harvested to put himself through college. The parcel they purchased includes the historic farmhouse that the Butler’s live in, built in the 1880’s, and the farm’s Sugar House, which they have repaired and use for their own operation. “We wanted to keep the same kind of tradition that we grew up on, and this is the best thing we can do to keep that value system going,” Jennifer said. “We try to incorporate anything we can to keep our histories and the story going. Everything we use is as much as possible a piece of history. When we’re in the sugar house, it’s stories that entertain us, not electronics.” The Butlers have continued to improve their operation using more modern technology, such as tubing systems with vacuum, a steam-away, and have recently added a reverse osmosis machine. Even with all of these advancements, they still use a wood-fired evaporator. Anything else that can be reused or recycled is put to good use. Some of the glass-lined dairy tubes used on Jennifer’s parents’ farm are utilized at Butler’s, as are some stainless steel tanks and other sterile equipment. Jody maintains thirteen antique tractors on the farm, the newest of them built in 1967. They are used in day-to-day operations and put on display during the annual Maple Weekend held in March, along with over twenty others belonging to family and friends. When the couple purchased the farm, the sugar house had not been used in over twenty years. Jen and Jody cleaned up the equipment and used it, producing enough syrup for the use of themselves and their extended family. The following year, what equipment could be used in commercial production was kept, while anything unsafe or hard to keep clean was discarded, and new equipment purchased to replace it. Bryan and Donna Ianson, owners of Potter County’s Brydonson Farms and members of the Potter/Tioga Maple Producers, helped Jody and Jennifer procure the right equipment and get off to a good start.

Family Owned and Operated Tripled D Maple is a Certified Organic Maple farm located in the rural hills of Tioga County, Pennsylvania. We are proud to offer our customers many Certified Organic Maple Products. Triple D Maple is located on the Davis Farm perhaps better known today as Triple D Farms and is operated by Jared and Rachael Davis with help from their extended families. The Davis’s first entered the Maple Syrup arena in the 1980s when they started collecting sap and hauling it to Kinnan Century Trees where it was processed on shares. After the conclusion of the 2013 season and with an increase in production and hauling time, Jared decided the time was right to build a sugarhouse. Jared’s plan was to take advantage of the landscape and plan for the future. He decided to build the sugarhouse at the bottom of the hill. Although initially this would require overcoming a few larger obstacles, in the long run it would mean that there was a potential that sap from every single tap on the property could flow to the sugarhouse. Thus the sugarhouse was built a few hundred feet from the very lowest point on the 400 acre farm.

At Miller’s Purely Maple, located about five miles north of US-6 between Mansfield and Wellsboro in scenic Tioga County, the highest-quality maple products are produced by Dale and Melanie Miller. Dale and his brother started tapping trees and boiling syrup to give to his family and friends as a hobby in the 1970’s, but got out of the business for a few years. Then, he married Melanie, whose family produced maple on their farms, and once again sparked Dale’s interest in sugaring. In 1995, they decided to begin again in earnest, tapping 100 trees and making forty gallons of syrup in that first year alone. A local farmer readying to retire sold his equipment to the Millers that fall, and the following spring, Dale and Melanie produced 180 gallons from 600 taps on the Miller Farm, with plans to expand in following seasons. Dale and Melanie have created quite a business, averaging 1000 gallons of syrup produced on the farm each season, reaching a goal set for themselves in the early days of their business. Though the Millers still fire with wood, their entire operation is on a tubing system, with underground pipelines to carry the sticky, sweet sap to the sugar house. The Millers use only food-grade plastic and stainless steel equipment to create prize-winning, preservative-free maple syrup. A video detailing the Millers’ operation is available that tells about the history and production processes at the farm, and contains general information about pure maple syrup. Melanie also designs labels for her syrup bottles which highlight area attractions such as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Hills Creek State Park and other scenic views and cultural events. The retail shop, open year-round, stocks syrup, cream, sugar, candy and maple-coated nuts and a variety of seasonal maple goodies for sampling. He now seeks to improve and upgrade the current operation by doing things such replacing the tubing in the woods. The Miller family now seeks to create a more efficient operation and spend more time promoting and selling the maple products that they produce.

The Portage Station Museum is located at the corner of Lee and Washington Streets. This station was built in 1926 and served until 1954 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The first floor was the ticket office and waiting room and the second floor was for freight. Passengers would exit the building, walk under the concrete arch next to the museum, and climb up a stairway located in the middle of the arch. The stairs would put them at an outdoor waiting area located between the railroad tracks, allowing them to board westbound or eastbound trains. This is clearly depicted by the photograph at the top of the HO scale model of the Portage Railroad. The station currently houses the Portage Area Historical Society.

The extremely high grade presented the final obstacle in conquering the Allegheny Mountains, making it necessary to build tunnels as early as 1850. The New Portage Tunnel was completed in 1854 at an elevation of 2,167 feet, and was traditionally (and still is) used primarily for eastbound traffic. The Allegheny Tunnel, at 3,605 feet in length, was completed that same year. The third tunnel, known as the Gallitzin Tunnel, was completed in 1904 and removed from service when the Allegheny Tunnel was expanded to two tracks in 1995. The Tunnels were so significant to the transportation system that they were guarded during the war years. Still in use today, you can feel the awesome power of trains as they pass through the tunnels daily.

The first inhabitants of the area, the Delaware Indians, shared in the Punxsutawney "Groundhog" roots with their own Indian version of "legend and lore." Punxsutawney was originally a campsite halfway between the Allegheny and Susquehanna rivers. It is located on the earliest known trail to the East, the Shamokin path. The area was, at times, occupied by Shawnee or Delaware Indians and, sometimes, by Senecas or Iroquois. According to the original "Creation" Story of the Delaware Indians, the "Lenni Lenape" (or original people), who were their forebears, began life as animals in "mother earth" and emerged centuries later to hunt and live as men. Thus it was that Oijik (Wejak), or Wojak, which was carried over to us as "'Woodchuck", came to be recognized as the "grandfather" of the earliest known inhabitants of this area. Although the area previously served as a "border" between Indian nations, the displaced Delawares settled in large numbers about 1723 because of the pressures from white men in the East and Iroquois intrigue. The main move toward the west followed between l740 and l760 as the result of further pressure. It was during this period that an lndian sorcerer first appeared in various forms and attacked travelers from the East. He was hunted and killed in combat by a young chief. His body was burned to destroy the "evil medicine" but miraculously turned to searing sandflies, or "ponksad," which plagued the area and the Indians. From that time the Indians called the location, " Ponksaduteney," which meant the "town of the sandflies." The sandflies are now gone, but the "ghost of the spelling" is with us to stay. Pay Online! Historical Societies
Potter County was created in 1804, carved out from a northwest section of Lycoming County. It is located midway between the eastern and western boundaries of Pennsylvania along the New York border. The county's name is a tribute to General James Potter, who served with distinction during the Revolutionary War but never set foot in the area. Potter County's bountiful forests proved to be the region's main attraction and economic lifeblood during a growth spree that began to subside during the first decade of the 20th century. Native Americans had passed through the forested wilderness, but had congregated in larger numbers in neighboring regions. In 1808, an east/west road across the northern part of Pennsylvania was opened, ushering in scattered settlers. They remained few in number due to the hardship of finding the bare necessities. Ultimately, Potter County's attraction to the outside world was its dense forests of magnificent white pine, hemlock and hardwoods. For decades, the principal occupation of its inhabitants was lumbering and clearing land. Many of the immigrants came from Maine and Canada. Lumber mills were built along streams with sufficient water supply to turn the saws. As more families arrived, churches and schools were built and communities were formed. Railroads were built through the forests to haul logs to the large saw mills in local communities such as Galeton, Cross Fork, Austin, Mina, and Keating Summit. Gradually, railroads replaced the swollen streams in carrying the finished lumber to larger markets on the east coast. Labor was imported, including many European immigrants, and in 1900 the population of Potter County reached its all time high of 30,621. Industrial plants were established, using wood or bark as raw materials. As the hillsides became barren, the population spiraled downward. With much of the barren timberland abandoned, its ownership reverted to the Commonwealth. Today, almost 300,000 acres, more than 40 percent of the land in Potter County, is owned by the Commonwealth. Although there are scattered manufacturing facilities and small businesses, farming and lumbering remain components of the county's economic foundation. Tourism and recreation also generate jobs and income. Much of the forest that was hacked away from 1890-1910 has returned, and a third generation is growing in some areas. Succession forests consist of a higher proportion of marketable hardwoods. Potter County has been called the roof of the Eastern United States, as headwaters of the Ohio/Mississippi rivers, Chesapeake Bay and the St. Lawrence River. The county's population descended rapidly from 1900 through 1930. There were fluctuations over the next half-century before a steady rise in the 1990s. Between 1990 and 2000, the population rose from 16,717 to 18,080. It rose even more in 2001-02. However, a recent estimate released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows a population of 16,720 as of 2008, representing a 7.5-percent decline since 2000.
